Abstract
The technology used in reducing losses and retaining quality of fresh fruits and vegetables has been developed and refined in the past century or so. This has particularly included the changing of the gaseous atmosphere in the store or package to supplement reduced temperatures. The control of these gases in store was first achieved by trial and error, but more recently the use of the physiological effects on the stored fruits or vegetables has been shown to achieved a more satisfactory effect of various postharvest parameters and has been patented and increasingly used commercially.

Safepod
International Controlled Atmosphere Limited from the UK and Storage Control Systems from the United States have developed a system called “Safepod” to measure the CO2 and O2 and calculate RQ within a sample chamber. The patent for SafePod is held jointly by David Bishop and Jim Schaefer (US Patent No. 8739694, Canadian Patent No. CA2746152) (SCS, 2016). The Safepod sits in the CA store and thus has the same temperature, humidity, pressure, and atmosphere as the store. Periodically the valves are closed and the CO2 and O2 are measured and the RQ calculated. Safepod is based on stress detection on a representative sample of fruit (some 70 kg) and automatic measurement of respiration rate and RQ, which can then be used to adjust the store atmosphere to its optimum O2 and CO2 levels. The SafePod is a hermetically sealed enclosure with a stainless steel base and a clear molded cover that sits in a water trough for sealing (Fig. 4). Motorized valves and a circulation fan are normally open to maintain the atmosphere within the SafePod at the same concentration as the surrounding CA room.
